X-ONT at Asian Conference on Remote Sensing

X-ONT SOFTWARE presents paper at The 29th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS) 2008 from 10-14 November 2008, Colombo, Sri Lanka. The X-ONT paper was on the topic of “A Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) using Web Map Services (WMS) – A minimal cost GIS analysis and implementation”, presented by Ms. Ishwari Sivagnanam, Head of GIS Div, co authored by Fazeem Farook, Ganesalingam Vasanthan along with Ms. Ishwari.

“ACRS is a unique conference which brings together geospatial leaders from Asia and other industry leaders worldwide.” said Fazeem Farook, CEO of X-ONT Software. “ it gives us great pleasure and we are pleased to share our experience of implementing low cost web based GIS solutions to the participants of ACRS ‘08”

Abstract of Paper
Businesses and industries are high-end users of a spatial decision making process. Supply and demand calculations and resource allocation decisions are made continuously. The technology used in the decision making process is limited traditionally to report and chart generating applications. Using spatial analysis through a Business GIS solution would greatly benefit the industry. Desktop GIS, where data capture to analysis are handled centrally, has made it easy for the academician and professional to build and implement SDSS tools. Nevertheless there is a skill requirement and a technology expense associated with such an implementation. As a result very few businesses houses and industries would see the investment on a GIS solution as meaningful.

Web-based Mapping services have almost eliminated technical GIS ‘obstacles’ and have made GIS solutions affordable. Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS) can be provided through a Map Server.  The Map Server interface facilitates data flow from different (spatial) repositories wherein the data capture is left with the service providers.
This paper discusses a Web-based GIS solution that has been implemented in Sri Lanka in the retail industry. This solution is currently used as a decision support tool to monitor sales and field staff performances, field staff management and inventory controls. Simultaneously the Web GIS solution allows the user to publish map reports that show sales summaries and other such related statistics.

It is possible to take this solution even further by making the WMS a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) website. This will allow field staff to directly access the WMS through a GPRS enabled mobile phone. This in turn will serve to promote healthy interaction within the management.
